I like to work open-by-default in this way, because there’s basic procedural knowledge involved in thriving in this world which people aren’t magically primed with. Staying existing, showing up presentable for work, maintaining yourself and all the systems of modern life - is hard and a skill unto itself!
I was fortunate to grow up in a good environment and smart parents, and I was given a solid head start on figuring some of this stuff out; I believe this effect is one of the many snares that can perpetuate e.g. low socioeconomic status. Taboos about talking frankly about some of these issues seem contrary to the scientific ideal.
