Notes on feeding oneself

hash browns are nice for breakfast. can I make them?

I boiled up some frozen veg 10 mins in plastic in the microwave,

mixed with black beans and a can of sliced mushrooms,

then added a bunch of woostershire sauce.

this is a great meal!

I put sharpie markers next to the fridge at home and at work. This way I can remember to mark when I opened an item so I don’t throw it out early and waste food.

For stuff like cheese, it would be great to have a reusable (glass?) container at work that I can keep re-sealing big stuff in so I don’t need to keep bagging it in plastic bags.

I diced some potatoes, boiled them for 15 minutes, and then ate them after they were room-temperature. Really great, quick to eat, nice snack. I should have more cold potato dishes.

. I’m storing the potatoes in the fridge, haven’t had issues with them going moldy.

gnocchi is great.

I made some basmati rice. two of the rice-cups and two water-cups. cooks super, super quickly and is very nice and fluffy.

added in some tofu.

actuallly I was so hungry enough that I made another batch and ate that too.

potato gnocchi is dirt cheap, reliable, and high calorie.

washed a whole bag of potatoes (2 kg I think?), diced 'em

got water boiling, added potatoes to boiling water, set a timer for 15 minutes,

Added a large can of crushed seasoned tomatoes to the water. added a teaspoon of oregano, two tablespoons of knorr broth powder, can of black beans.

about 7 minutes before the timer ends I added some frozen cauliflower.

the potatoes needed another 5 minutes, then I mashed them a little.

For basically the first time since moving here, I spent less than $400 in food this month.

I’ve been a bit hungry, so not quite meeting calorie needs, but whatever.

I think the main difference was I brought food directly to work.

I reduced the amount I threw away for food safety feelings, I labelled date when I opened perishables, I bagged cheese so it wouldn’t harden

I relied on tofu a lot, even just brought a pack of tofu unopened to work and microwaved it.

I also did not eat out a single time or use the vending machine or ag cafe; if I had no food I would walk to the grocery store even if it was 9:30 pm.

recently I’ve brought food directly from walmart to work, that’s been fine. walmart prices are pretty good. it’s also kind of a shorter walk, faster, catch the bus.

just cracking open a can of lemon tuna is so nice as a treat. eating something mid-afternoon before I take the bus to prevent me from being really low when I get home seems to be useful.

colleague of mine who I respect mixes protein powder with morning beverages

not something I would think of doing, except if I continue to regularly forget to eat

oh man, canned lentils in water microwaved - nice lentil soup
