Why are people who write about ermine so emotive and florid? These might be my favorite snippets of text ever

“A glance at the physiognomy of the weasels would suffice to betray their character. The teeth are almost of the highest known raptorial character; the jaws are worked by enormous masses of muscles covering all the side of the skull. The forehead is low and the nose is sharp; the eyes are small, penetrating, cunning, and glitter with an angry green light. There is something peculiar, moreover, in the way that this fierce face surmounts a body extraordinarily wiry, lithe, and muscular. It ends in a remarkable long and slender neck in such a way that it may be held at right angle with the axis of the latter. When the creature is glancing around with the neck stretched up, and flat triangular head bent forward, swaying from one side to the other, we catch the likeness in a moment – it is the image of a serpent.” – Coues, E.

Mustelids typically dispatch small prey with a bite to the neck or base of the skull—this is as swift and merciful as death can come in the natural world.*
No animal or bird, below a certain maximum of strength, or other means of self-defence, is safe from their ruthless and relentless pursuit. The enemy assails them not only upon the ground, but under it, and on trees, and in the water. Swift and sure-footed, he makes open chase and runs down his prey; keen of scent, he tracks them, and makes the fatal spring upon them unawares; lithe and of extraordinary slenderness of body, he follows the smaller through the intricacies of their hidden abodes, and kills them in their homes. And if he does not kill for the simple love of taking life, in gratification of superlative bloodthirstiness, he at any rate kills instinctively more than he can possibly require for his support. I know not where to find a parallel among the larger Carnivora.” – Coues, E. 1877. Fur-bearing Animals pp. 128-129.*
I need to read more of this. This is like the introduction of a dragon in a fantasy novel.
Time distribution
I was in a workshop in UK a while back and time distribution came up a lot. Two frameworks that were discussed were MRF (Micro-Research Finland Oy) and White Rabbit.

While a normal PTP service provides a level of time accuracy sufficient for most current use cases, White Rabbit compensates for the chromatic dispersion of the fibre. This can be an issue for long distance fibre connections between a master atomic clock and different nodes of a network.

To manage defense efficiently and at the lowest possible cost along presumed business lines of management and organization is a useful standard. But there are prices we cannot afford to pay for meeting it exactly. One is the abandonment of democratic control. Another is the loss of a war. Defense cannot be “managed” like a business. But it can be led so as to preserve most effectively our national security interests.
Science cannot be managed like a business. Measles is a price we cannot afford to pay.
There are comments below about what happens when the sun gets very close to the line of sight back to Earth, but the problem is not the total power output of the sun; it is the scintillation −− the variation of power with time −− that forces the PLL to run with so large a tracking bandwidth that it can’t lock up properly.
My prediction is that the “Hacking is Cool” dumb idea will be a dead idea in the next 10 years. I’d like to fantasize that it will be replaced with its opposite idea, “Good Engineering is Cool” but so far there is no sign that’s likely to happen.

Discussion of declining reading rates.
figures around 16% read for pleasure
Cara says there is good evidence that reading for pleasure improves metrics of anxiety, the ability to empathize, etc.
This makes me want to do a better job reading more.

Members of the genus Aspergillus are ubiquitous filamentous fungus found anywhere on earth. To date, over 185 Aspergillus species have been identified, 20 of which have been reported to cause harmful infections in humans, animals, and plants. Among the Aspergillus species, the Aspergillus flavus may be the most infamous because it causes direct infections and systematic diseases in humans [1]. A. flavus is second only to A. fumigatus, the leading cause of human invasive aspergillosis [2]. Although invasive aspergillosis is rare in immunocompetent people, it contributes to the morbidity and mortality rate in immunosuppressed patients [3]. In addition, A. flavus is frequently the main cause of food contamination and the key ingredient in the production of aflatoxins, a group of common and extremely hazardous secondary metabolites, the most potent naturally occurring toxic and hepatocarcinogenic compounds [4]. About 4.5 billion people are affected by uncontrolled amounts of aflatoxin in developing countries; aflatoxicosis is ranked sixth among the 10 most important health risks identified by Williams et al. [5].

Table IV shows the results of direct triangular comparisons
between the odors of ( —)- and (+)-carvones from natural
and synthetic sources. These results unequivocally show
no significant differences as a result of the source (natural
or synthetic) of either (+)- or (—)-carvone but very highly
significant differences (P < 0.001) between (+)- and ( —)-
carvones from both sources.
Thus, the experimental evidence is entirely in favor of the
claim that the optical isomers of carvone do indeed have
characteristically different odors, the (—)-carvone resembling
spearmint oil and the (T-)-carvone resembling caraway oil.
The possibility that the impurities in the synthetic (+)-
and ( —)-carvones are the same as the natural impurities
is extremely small.
